Local-First Software

Story Analytics is open-source software that runs locally on your machine. Your data, charts, and dashboards are stored as files on your computer. No data is sent to our servers because there are no servers — you run everything yourself.

Third-Party Services

Story Analytics connects to third-party services only when you explicitly configure them:

• Database connections: When you connect to Snowflake, PostgreSQL, or BigQuery, queries are sent directly from your machine to those services using credentials you provide.
• AI providers: When you use the AI assistant, your chart configuration and schema information are sent to the LLM provider you choose (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google). Your raw data is not sent — only column names, types, and sample values used for query generation.

These connections are governed by the respective privacy policies of each service. Story Analytics does not intercept, store, or forward this data.

Data Storage

All data is stored locally in the data/ directory of your Story Analytics installation:

• Uploaded CSV files
• Chart configurations (JSON)
• Dashboard layouts (JSON)
• Settings including API keys (JSON)

API keys are stored in plaintext in data/settings.json. This file is gitignored by default to prevent accidental commits.

Analytics

The Story Analytics application does not include any telemetry, tracking, or analytics. The storyanalytics.ai website may use basic analytics to understand visitor traffic.
